One of my biggest pet peeves is the low level of service that many technology industry professionals provide. I am talking about anything from being condescended to when you ask someone to explain an acronym you are unfamiliar with to being told its your problem you didn’t understand the techno-speak when you signed up for a service that failed to deliver on its seemingly straightforward promises. It can be very frustrating; as a small business owner that is trying to drive traffic from your website, it can seem you are expected to know everything about the following:
- Service Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Color Theory
- UX (User Experience)
- UI (User Interface)
- Responsive Web Design
- Google Adwords
- Google Adsense
- Google Analytics
- Social Media
- and more…
In fact, you most likely know there is much to the internet that you don’t take advantage of, that you may not be making the most of your internet presence and that you could be leaving money on the table for more experienced businesses to pick up.
Queue the entrance music for web design, SEO, marketing and other specialized firms that also know small business owners are typically not experts in all of the above-mentioned fields.
Now the question you are faced with is how much money are you willing to spend and what promises are these firms making for your Return On Investment (ROI)? How do you interview ‘specialists’ in an area that you know nothing about? I think this is where my blood pressure starts to go up, as I have listened to pitches from companies that claim to get your site ranked number one on Google, without telling you that they are talking about you being ranked number 1 for your own company name. They deliver what they promised on a technicality because the listener didn’t know the right question to ask. That’s just harsh.
